On Tuesday, May 14, 2013, the San Juan School District Board of Education held their monthly meeting at the District Office. Here are a few highlights from the meeting:

Individuals retiring at the end of the school year were recognized by the board, and thanked for their time spent with the district. The district has 14 retirees this year, 7 of whom were present at board meeting. Combined, our retirees have over 400 years of service with the district. Each retiree received a gift, and Superintendent Doug Wright expressed heartfelt thanks, on behalf of the district, for all they have done for the students we serve.

Two representatives from MHTN Contractors, the firm responsible for the design of Tsé’bii’nidzisgai Elementary school, presented the board with an award they won for the planning process used in the design of the school. Praise was given to Bilingual Director Clayton Long for his contribution to the design, and also for the integration of Navajo Culture in the project.

The board reviewed and approved all but one of the School LAND Trust Plans. San Juan High’s plan was returned for more clarification on one of their items.

A new policy regarding employees and concealed weapons was reviewed and passed on a first reading. Revisions will be made and the policy will be reviewed again at the June 2013 board meeting.

The district will soon be implementing an evaluation plan for teachers. This new evaluation program is in response to Senate Bill 64 passed in 2012 which established new requirements for educator evaluations. The board approved the new plan, which was modeled after the state plan, with the understanding that further review and research is needed before the plan can be finalized.

Several elementary school employees have requested that the Board consider providing them with a district activity pass, whereby employees would be able to attend sporting events across the district free of charge. The board requested more information on how, were activity passes granted, gate ticket sales would be affected. This will be reviewed again at a future meeting.

Business Administrator Clayton Holt presented the budget report. This report included the revised budget for fiscal year 2013 and the proposed budget for fiscal year 2014.

If you would like further information on any of these topics, please see the meeting agenda here.
