Board Meeting Summary: April 16, 2013
The San Juan School District School Board held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Navajo Mountain High School. The Board discussed many issues, including the following:
-USBA Meeting: Issues from the Utah School Boards Association (USBA) Meeting, including concealed weapon permits for employees, consent agendas, policies, and law enforcement notifications of safe school violations. Debbie Christiansen gave a report of these issues, and the recommendations from USBA.
-Staffing Update: Kit Mantz provided the board with a report showing how many teachers will need to be replaced at each location for the upcoming school year.
-Budget Projections: The board briefly discussed the budget for next school year. The Superintendent has been holding a series of town-hall meetings with school staffs throughout the district. At these meetings, information was given regarding how the district’s money is budgeted, and feedback was sought on preferences for spending. Business Administrator Clayton Holt requested Board guidance on how to proceed.
-Food Services: The new Food Services Director has been hired-Anna Thayn. She has already begun working with Mary Swofford.
-Policies: Policy 4122-Background Checks-was passed on a second and final reading.
-Recognition: Monticello Elementary was recognized as a Utah Title 1 Reward School, based on their 2011-2012 test scores. This is a great accomplishment.
-Presentation: Principal Orlo Knight gave a presentation about Navajo Mountain High School. The school is improving in test results, and their graduates are having great success. Orlo will be retiring at the end of June 2013, and the Board expressed their thanks for his service to the district.
