First Board Meeting of 2013-14 School Year

On Tuesday, August 13th, the SJSD School Board held their first meeting of the new school year. It was held at the District Office, and began at 3:00 p.m. and ended at 7:00 p.m. Here are a few of the highlights of the meeting:

-The plan for future Capital Projects was discussed. Business Administrator Clayton Holt presented the ages and histories of each of the buildings in the district, and outlined the future need to replace buildings and structures. The Board was asked to be thinking of how they would like to proceed, and further input from them will be sought at a later date.

-Special Education Director gave a report of the Special Education Department, their goals and achievements. The SPED Department is moving in a positive direction and employs some wonderful people. He outlined some of their challenges and the goals they are working towards.

-The Board was updated on the Common Core and Essential Standards Project, the progress that has been made and the work that is left to do. Everything that has been compiled thus far can be found on the district website under the "Staff" tab. The Superintendent praised the efforts of Lynnette Johnson, who has organized and spear-headed the project, along with the teachers that have been involved.

-Melvin Capitan from the Montezuma Well Service approached the Board about the possibility of purchasing some land in Montezuma Creek next to WHS. The district will conduct research to see if this is something they wish to pursue.
