Academic Eligibility Policy

MVHS Academic Eligibility Policy

The Athletic Director will check the grades of students listed on the most updated rosters every A-Day Friday (after 3:00).  In the event that there is no school on an A-Day Friday the eligibility check will be conducted on the last day of that same week.  Teachers may not “sign-off” on grades; grades must be updated in SIS.

Once eligibility for each term as been established using the UHSAA guidelines, eligibility to participate in extra-curricular activities at MVHS means that students are passing all of their classes with at least a D-.  This is the minimum standard for participation.  Teachers and coaches should encourage students to achieve well beyond this; however this is the minimum standard.

1st Offense:  If a student who is participating in any extra-curricular activities has a grade of “F” on the Academic Low Achievement Report, he/she will be considered ineligible to participate in “multi-school events” until the student prints out a current Student Progress Report which shows that he/she is passing all classes.  This report should be brought to the respective coach/advisor.  The coach/advisor will then hand it in to the Athletic Director prior to the student representing MVHS in any multi-school events.  The Athletic Director will track the eligibility of all students who participate in extra-curricular activities.

2nd Offense:  If a student who is participating in any extra-curricular activities has a grade of “F” on the Academic Low Achievement Report for a second time during that sport/activity season, he/she will be considered ineligible to participate in “multi-school events” for one week, running Monday-Friday of the following school week.  During this week of ineligibility, he/she must print out a current Student Progress Report which shows passing grades in all classes.  This report should be brought to the respective coach/advisor.  The coach/advisor will then hand it in to the Athletic Director prior to the student representing MVHS in any multi-school events, after the week of ineligibility is over.

3rd Offense:  If a student who is participating in any extra-curricular activities has a grade of “F” on the Academic Low Achievement Report for a third time during that sport/activity season, he/she will be considered ineligible to participate in “multi-school events” for two weeks, running Monday-Friday of the following two school weeks.

4th Offense:  If a student who is participating in any extra-curricular activities has a grade of “F” on the Academic Low Achievement Report for a fourth time during that sport/activity season, he/she will be removed from the team/club/activity.

In order to be eligible for a team, the student must have passed the previous term with a 2.0 or higher and had no more than one "f" grade.

Research shows that students who participate in extra-curricular activities tend to get better grades have fewer discipline issues and help in the overall climate and overall spirit of the school.  As teachers please make every effort to help and support these students.  They should not be treated differently but we should try and help them as much as we can by encouraging them and complimenting them for their participation.

Thank you,

Athletic Directors
